Disease: Understanding The Cause
“Illnesses hover constantly above us, their
seeds blown by the wind, but they do not set in the terrain unless the
terrain is ready to receive them.” Claude Bernard was a
19th century French
physiologist and contemporary of French chemist Louis Pasteur. The two
famous doctors argued throughout their lives as to what really was the
cause of disease, the soil or the seed. Pasteur
insisted it was the seed (germ) while Bernard claimed it was the soil
(the body). On Pasteurs
death bed, it is said that he admitted that Bernard was right; he said,
“ it is the soil, not the
seed.” The seed (germ
factors) or the soil (the body, host factors) argument was as prevalent
then as it is now again today. Today
many medical authors are agreeing that, although germs are certainly a
factor involved in the diseases of man, “If the germ theory of disease were correct, there would be no one living to believe it.” Think about it for a moment, and you will see the common sense in Dr. Palmers statement. Some medical doctors and most Chiropractors agree that the germ, though being part of the disease syndrome, is not the direct cause of disease. First a person must be susceptible to the germ. Germs will always be with us and our concern should be to strengthen our resistance to them. Dr. D.D. Palmer, Chiropractic Science holds that regular chiropractic care helps prevent disease and maintains the body in a high state of health. That is why millions of people choose to receive regular monthly chiropractic care. The cause of disease is within you, it is the lack of your body's ability to ward off disease. Increase this ability through the natural drugless method of chiropractic care.

Chronic Migraines Helped by Chiropractic, Study Shows A study published in the February 2000 issue of
the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, (JMPT),
showed that people suffering with migraine headaches were helped with
chiropractic care. The study was conducted in Australia at the
Chiropractic Research Center of Macquarie University. In this research
177 volunteers were studied who had migraine headaches for over 18 years
on average. Many of the participants also suffered from neck pain. ![]()
The average response of the group that received chiropractic care showed a statistically significant improvement in migraine frequency, duration, and disability. The study also showed that those who received chiropractic care were able to reduce their medication use, with a significant number reducing their medication usage to zero! Additionally, 59% had no neck pain after a period of two months, and another 35% had a decrease in neck pain. The researchers concluded this study, built on previous studies that had similar results. "There have now been several studies demonstrating significant improvement in headaches or migraines after chiropractic.” The Migraine Foundation of Australia estimates that some 12% of Australians ages 15 and over, experience migraines.

Chiropractic Shown to Help Body Physiology
This literature review looked at more than twenty studies involving subjects who were specifically described as, “asymptomatic,” “healthy,” “normal,” or “free from physical injury.” In addition, an equal number of studies were found also documenting objectively measured health benefits in subjects who had no symptomatic presentation, (asymptomatic). The results of this large review showed measurable objective improvements in things such as range of motion, blood pressure, heart rate, plasma catecholamine levels, immune responses, enhanced respiratory burst, pupil reactions, slower heart rate, improved pulmonary function, as well as many other objectively measured indications of improved body physiology. The conclusion of the study stated, "Data reviewed in this article lend strong support to the popular contention that chiropractic adjustments, for the purpose of correcting subluxations, confer health benefits to people regardless of the presence or absence of symptoms." The JVSR article authors further conclude, "A significant amount of preliminary evidence supports that people without symptoms can benefit from chiropractic care. It is plausible that chiropractic care may be of benefit to every function of the body and have the potential for long-term, overall health benefit to those receiving chiropractic care."

Chiropractic Care Beneficial for Chronic Neck Pain According to Study
A new study published
in the February 2006 issue of the scientific periodical the Journal of
Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT), shows that patients
with chronic neck pain benefit from chiropractic. The authors start off
by noting that neck pain is, "a very cost-demanding health problem."
The study was performed at the Scandinavian College of Chiropractic in
Stockholm, Sweden. In this study patients with complaints of continuous neck pain during the previous 3 months were considered chronic and accepted for participation in the study. Of all those participating, the patients were divided into two groups. One group was a control group with no chiropractic care while the other group received chiropractic. The same outcome measurements were used on both groups to be able to compare the results. A follow up assessment was done on all patients at the time of the initial consultation and then a second time at the end of the 5-week study period which was 2-4 days after the conclusion of the treatments for the patients in the treatment group. The assessments were done to review three areas, symptoms, cervical range of motion, and head repositioning accuracy. Head repositioning accuracy, (HRA) is a test that measures the ability of the neuroarticulomuscular system to reposition the head in a neutral posture after active movements. The results showed that for two of the areas tested, the group that received chiropractic care on average showed improvement. With respect to pain, after the intervention, the chiropractic group showed a significantly lower degree of pain intensity. The results of the testing for head repositioning (HRA) were even more impressive, where significant improvements in all aspects of HRA were seen for the group that received chiropractic care. There was however, no perceivable difference in the groups relative to range of motion at the conclusion of the study. The researchers noted, "The results of this study suggest that chiropractic care can be effective in influencing the complex process of proprioceptive sensibility and pain of cervical origin." In other simpler words, chiropractic helped for people with long standing neck pain.

What to Expect at your First Chiropractic Consultation The First Visit to a Chiropractor As a Great Jacksonville Chiropractor we will do everything in our power to help relieve our patient’s back pain or sciatica as fast as possible with as few treatments as necessary, and also give advice on how to avoid future episodes of back pain. Here’s some of what to expect at your first chiropractic visit, during which the chiropractor will complete a thorough consultation lasting 45 minutes or more:
Full patient history In preparation for consultation with the chiropractor, an individual will be asked to fill out forms that provide background information about the symptoms and condition. Types of questions the chiropractor might ask include:
Patients are also usually asked to provide information on family medical history, any pre-existing medical conditions or prior injuries, and previous and current health providers and treatments. Chiropractic physical examination A thorough chiropractic examination includes general tests such as blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and reflexes, as well as specific orthopedic and neurological tests to assess:
Further chiropractic tests may be necessary to assess the affected area (such as having the individual move in a specific manner, posture analysis, or chiropractic manipulation of the affected body part). Diagnostic studies Based upon the results of the history and chiropractic examination, diagnostic studies may be helpful in revealing pathologies and identifying structural abnormalities that can be used to more accurately diagnose a condition. Diagnostic studies are not always necessary. The most common diagnostic studies used by chiropractors include:
Hodges chiropractic offers basic X-rays, but an MRI scan and more extensive imaging studies will be referred to an outside center. Chiropractic diagnosis History, physical examination and any diagnostic studies lead to a specific diagnosis. Once the diagnosis is established, the chiropractor will determine if the condition will respond to chiropractic care. The chiropractor will explain a patient’s:

Chiropractic Care for Pregnancy
"Pregnancy Today" magazine describes
themselves as "the journal for parents to be". On June 13, 2004 they
ran a story written by Patti Larson a mother and author, about her
experiences while being pregnant and the help she received with
Chiropractic care. She began the story by explaining the emotions she
and her husband experienced when she found out for sure she was
pregnant.
As a woman in her mid-30s having her first baby, she described her concerns and questions by asking, "When will morning sickness start? How long will I be able to work? Will I make it through delivery with little pain and swearing?" She also noted that her diet and sleep habits were good, but although she had great intentions, her exercise regime was less than desirable. She did however, mention the one thing she saw as a big factor in helping her. "What ultimately saved me from suffering undue tiredness, aches and stress from my ballooning body shape and shifting hormones was chiropractic care." She continued, "I already made regular visits to my chiropractor prior to pregnancy, so it seemed natural to continue. My chiropractor recommended I continue with weekly visits, adding that I should come in more often if I felt I needed it." Dr. Jeff Ptak, her chiropractor in Santa Monica, Calif., explained why chiropractic care made such a positive difference, during her pregnancy. "Chiropractic care addresses the functioning nervous system," he said. "When the nervous system is not unduly stressed from environmental factors – physical, emotional or chemical stress – the body will work according to its unique genetic plan. A stressful birth will stress all parties involved and remain until the nervous system stress is cleared. Chiropractic, by allowing the body to handle stress, helps expecting mothers, new mothers and their newborn children handle life with greater ease."
Leslie Stewart, a certified nurse-midwife
also agrees. "Chiropractic care can actually help with labor. Some women
who run past their due date have used treatment to help start labor,
rather than having a hospital induce them."
The article author, Patti Larson, noted that she not only continued care through her pregnancy, but also after the birth of her daughter Madeline. She concluded the article by saying, "Madeline received regular adjustments her second week after entering the world. She never had colic, ear infections, colds or any symptoms of sickness throughout her first 12 months of life when children are often most susceptible. Some people cringe when I tell them she sees a chiropractor, yet everyone agrees that she is one of the most alert, active babies they have ever seen. Some say I’m lucky, but I tell them it’s really very simple – just stay well adjusted!"
